Unseen, Unheard, Untold is a narrative journey through the streets, towns and cities of India and Bangladesh. It looks beyond familiar accounts of palaces and monuments to the lives of people who are rarely noticed or heard.

From Kolkata’s ageing rickshaw pullers to Dhaka’s Urdu-speaking Bihari refugees, the book explores communities, individual stories and ways of life that are often overlooked, sometimes threatened and occasionally disappearing. Many of the stories are told in the words of the people themselves. Along the way, the book also explores the cultural worlds surrounding these encounters -from literature, cinema, music and the places where people gather.

An as-yet unpublished, full-length book, Unseen, Unheard, Untold is illustrated with Adrian Whittle’s photography. Some of the people readers will meet are pictured here.
